The other day my client told me she had too many ideas.
Okay... what are they?
As she listed off her ideas, it became apparent (to her) that her problem wasn't that she had too many ideas... it was that she didn't know what to do next for each of them.
Okay. Tell me what you need to do for this one.
And as she started telling me what she needed to do... she realised she knew exactly what she needed to do!
I'm not making fun of my client. This is what brains do. They show us a whole load of information, all at once, and we get overwhelmed and can't work out what to do next.
In this case, we needed to break it down, and take one step at a time.
We didn't need to race ahead.
This—not racing ahead—is actually very hard to master. Our brains have all this wonderful information that's immediately accessible to us; why wouldn't we want to take advantage of that?
When it gets overwhelming is a good place to stop.
I know this is easier said than done. But you also know, in moments of your life, how to come back to the here and now.
This is one of the practices I encourage for my clients. And each person has their own ways of coming back to the here and now.
From here, you have awareness. And from awareness, you can respond in a way that feels more intentional and aligned with your values.
When you come back to 'here,' you will be more yourself. You will notice the obvious.
You will notice the next step more easily.
And you will notice, maybe you don't need to race ahead :)
Much love,
Kathryn
If you’re thinking about taking the next steps in your life or business, I’d love to see if a chat together could be of help. I offer free conversations to anyone who would like someone to bounce ideas off of or help them think through a situation. I can’t promise we will have all your problems solved, but my aim is to help you get out of your current thinking pattern, and into new areas to explore.
If that sounds good to you, book a free chat here.
(If you’re wondering what the catch is, there isn’t one. You give me your time and attention, I give you mine. And we engage in a collaborative process to help you move towards where you want to be. If you find the process helpful, you can always engage me as a coach to work as a longer-term thinking-partner; but there is no obligation at all.)
