I really wish I was the kind of person who could use email templates.
(I'm guessing you know the things I mean โ a template for an email, with prompts on how to tailor it to your audience/business.)
Using email templates would save SO. Much. Time.
And yet, whenever I even look at one, I feel my stomach squirm.
It's not because I think they're bad or manipulative. I can see how they're super useful.
But using them means using words I didn't write. It means using language, and a way of speaking, I don't use.ย
Most of them are super upbeat and conversational. And that's not to say I'm not conversational... But the tone always feels completely different (if you know what I mean?)
Honestly, sometimes I feel like I'm a bit of an idiot for not taking advantage of email templates. I've come across so many,ย and sometimes I think: Wow, there's a lot out there. They must be effective. (And I'm sure many are.)
Why aren't I using them? Why am I such a chump?
I know why I'm not using them. I know it's because they're not a great fit for my personality (and perhapsย my business model too).
And yet... I can't help but sometimes wonder if I should just 'get over it.'
Just get over it.
I'm guessing you've probably told yourself that before.
Join the bandwagon. Be sensible. Take advantage of something that everyone else is using.
Of course, it's not 'everyone else.' But sometimes it feels like anyone who isn't 'everyone else' โ including you โ are the dafties! Missing out!
And of course, itโs part of human nature. We're primed to look around and notice what other people are doing. We're on the lookout for opportunities we could take advantage of too.
All this is to say, you're not alone if you've tried something out or bought something, because other people were doing it โ presuming it must be a good idea โ and then wondered why it didn't work out so well for you.
It's not that the thing you bought or tried out was bad. (Although sometimes, that is the case!)
It's not that you're 'bad.' (Or hopeless, or unable to 'get' this.)
Sometimes, it isn't a good fit. Or it isn't a good fit for the person, season, and place you are in right now.
One of the things we can do to lessen these occurrences (the times when we buy into something because 'everyone else' is doing it โ and we feel like we've yet again duped ourselves), is to check in with what you want.
Check in with what you really want to get out of something. If it's a quick answer, or a template that 'gets you a result,' make sure you're happy with the format they provide.ย
And if it doesn't work well with you, for whatever reason, better to walk away and think about it. Better to discern what you like and don't like about it; and what you're really willing to do to get the result they are promising.
There are so many ways to save time, make money, and attain inner peace ๐
Choose the ones that really fit you. Be loyal โ to yourself.
Rather than try adopt every method, spend time with the few that really work for you.
Yes, part of finding what works for you is going through trial and error. But trust your judgement when you think you've made 'an error.' (Spoiler alert, you've just found a thing that didn't work for you. Move on. Take the lesson with you.)
Maybe one day I will use email templates. But I'm guessing they might be my own. Ones I've taken and adapted from previous emails and social media posts; ones that fit my 'brand' and personality. Ones that feel really good and right for me.
Ones that probably won't work for anyone else ๐
Much love,
Kathryn
